The 1987-88 Fighting Illini were just one season away from becoming the "Flying Illini", posting an overall record of 23-10 and finishing 16th in the national rankings. Illinois tied for third in the Big Ten standings and played two NCAA Tournament games. The starting lineup usually included Nick Anderson, Kendall Gill, Stephen Bardo, Kenny Battle, Jens Kujawa and Glynn Blackwell. Also contributing were Larry Smith, Ervin Small and Phil Kunz.
