The 2001 Fighting Illini was Coach Ron Turner's best club, winning 10 of its 11 regular-season games and claiming the Big Ten championship. It lost to LSU in the Sugar Bowl and finished with a No. 12 national ranking. Quarterback Kurt Kittner, receiver Brandon Lloyd and running back Rocky Harvey operated behind a strong offensive line, keyed by All-Big Ten performers Tony Pashos, Luke Butkus and Jay Kulaga. Illinois' top defensive players included Eugene Wilson, Bobby Jackson, Brandon Moore and Christian Morton.
